Get Well Soon Amy Winehouse

July 11, 2008 by Kimberlee Morrison

Since her breakout album Back to Black, Amy Winehouse has become the a tabloid fascination. With her beautiful sultry voice and her darkly modern twist on the Motown doo-wop era, Winehouse has earned critical acclaim and super-stardom. Unfortunately, she is also notorious for her addition to drugs and alcohol, with the world watching her spiralling down, down, down.

Over the last few months the buzz about Amy Winehouse - or more specifically her drug abuse and other social dysfunction, has hit fever pitch. Since January, Winehouse has been filmed in several crack dens, once actually hitting the pipe, and another time singing some racist nursery rhyme. She is gaining a reputation for strange concert behavior and her Drs have told her to give up drugs or die. There are even rumors that she will be replaced as the singer for the theme to the next James Bond movie.

Recently, Rolling Stone sent reporter, Claire Hoffman to London for an interview with Winehouse. The scene described by Hoffman was pretty bleak: a barely conscious Winehouse, puttering around preparing to make a statement to the waiting paparazzi on the day the news of the aforementioned “racist” video broke, disappearing up stairs at regular intervals and digging around a littered floor to find a scarf. What really struck me though, was that Winehouse claimed her downward spiral is a result of the incarceration of her beloved husband, Blake Fielder-Civil; Winehouse’s marriage to whom Hoffman sites as “when things got weird.”

Amy Winehouse is Late Again

May 31, 2008 by Sarah

Amy Winehouse is nothing if not predictable. Even though she’s supposedly through rehab and changing her ways, she showed up late to to her first post- rehab gig in at the Rock in Rio festival on Friday night.

According to reports, she was a bit of a mess:

Winehouse’s voice cracked throughout her performance and, at one point, she ran offstage. She had visible cuts on her left arm, a bandage on her right hand and apologized to the crowd for her sore throat.

You don’t know how sad all these reports make me. Amy has so much promise and talent, and she’s one of my favorite singers ever. Too bad she’s on such a downward spiral. Unfortunately, she won’t come clean until she’s good and ready, and that doesn’t seem to be happening any time soon.

Amy Winehouse Shows Up Too Late to Accept Award

May 23, 2008 by Sarah

When Amy Winehouse was announced as the winner of the prestigious Ivor Novello songwriting award in London yesterday, she showed up just as her father took the stage to accept on her behalf.

Unfortunately, Amy couldn’t make it, but she is getting better and sends you all her love,” said Mitch Winehouse who, fortunately, was in attendance to accept the award for Best Song for her hit “Love is a Losing Game.”

Perhaps she should re-write the tune to read “Drugs are a Losing Game.” Though it looked for a while that Amy was trying to get her life back in order, she appears to be off the wagon again. Though we’re thinking good positive thoughts for our girl Amy, she has to make the decision to remain clean and sober on her own.

Amy Winehouse Offered $2 Million for a Tell All

April 23, 2008 by Sarah

Amy Winehouse’s troubled life is worth $2 million. Amy and her presently incarcerated husband, Blake Fielder -Civil, are currently negotiating with Penguin books for an exclusive tell-all. Now, I love Amy Winehouse the musician, but Amy Winehouse the drug addict and Blake Fielder-Civil the bully who is in jail, aren’t worthy of a book, if you ask me. What kind of message does it send when poor role models are rewarded millions for their bad behavior.

Oh hell yeah, I’ll read it. I just won’t buy it.

Amy Winehouse can earn an easy million belting out tunes to perform for the Metropolitan Museum Institute of Costume Art.

Giorgio Armani, who is hosting the gala, has enlisted the aid of friends George Clooney and Julia Roberts in order to persuade Amy to perform. Amy is considering the offer. “Giorgio has made no secret to his friends that he would love to work with Amy,” said an unnamed source. “He sees this party as an ideal opportunity to sound her out about future projects.”

Let’s hope Amy doesn’t disappoint.

Hopefully we’ll have some great video to bring you!

Amy Winehouse Won’t Face Charges

February 27, 2008 by Sarah

Every time I post something about a musician doing bad, my sister Diana sends an email saying, “Hey…it’s supposed to be a positive perspective of women in music.” She hasn’t sent me one of those emails for a while, so I think I’m due. Consider it your birthday present, Diana. Time for some Amy Winehouse news.

Amy Winehouse was being investigated in conjunction with her husband Blake Fielder-Civil’s witness tampering arrest. The police were wondering if Amy furnished the money Blake wanted to use to bribe the witness in his assault trial. The good news is that Amy won’t be investigated after all. In a statement released this week, Amy said she’s “pleased to be discounted from the investigation and thanks the police for their professionalism in their dealings with her.”

That’s positive, right?

Sheryl Crow Wants to Collaborate with Amy Winehouse

February 20, 2008 by Sarah

Sheryl Crow and Amy Winehouse together on stage? Yeah I’d like to listen to that. Sheryl suggested recently she’d be interested in a duet. “I want to collaborate with Amy because she’s really hot and cool right now.”

It would be an interesting and fun pairing for sure.

Can’t wait!

Natalie Cole on Amy Winehouse

February 11, 2008 by Sarah

Natalie Cole doesn’t approve of Amy Winehouse’s Grammy nods.

“I’m going on record as an artist who is able to critique [Amy Winehouse]. I think she has a great talent, but I don’t agree with the Grammys giving her those nods. I think it sends the wrong message, that even in the midst of her stupor of drugs she can get nominated for all these awards. It’s a slap in the face to musicians and artists who work very hard that they turn around and give it to someone who really obviously doesn’t have a grasp of what she has. I’ve been in this business over 25 years and I sacrificed five years of my own life on drugs and almost lost my life because of it. So I take great offence to almost see someone getting glory out of being in the position that they’re in – she needs to get her life together and embrace her craft, she will lose it if she doesn’t get it together.”

You know, as much as I love me some Amy, I do understand Natalie’s point. Amy Winehouse spent most of 2007 in a drugged out stupor. But are the Grammys here to reward good behavior or good music? Is the award for “Song of the Year” or “drug addict of the year?”

I do agree we shouldn’t glorify people who behave badly, especially those who do drugs or worse. Amy made some very bad decisions this year and I’m not minimizing that at all. She overdosed, was videotaped smoking crack and more.  The award is all about the music though, not the drugs. Amy’s love for her music does show through. If she gets her stuff together she’ll be a force to be reckoned with. If the Grammy’s refused to give awards to people with substance abuse problems, 90% of the people who have Grammys on their shelves would have to give them back.
