Mariah Carey Cross-Dresses for Video Shoot

June 30, 2009 by Jeanne

I was really surprised when I saw these new pictures from Mariah Carey’s video shoot for her new single “Obsessed.”  She makes a number of costume changes and even dresses up as a man for two characters and I have to admit that I’m curious to see what the finished product looks like.

I remember that “Heartbreaker” had two Mariahs in it (I loved the fight scene between the two in the bathroom!) so this isn’t the first time she’s taken on multiple roles in a video.  At least she’s getting creative.  So much of what I see on MTV today is so bland and predictable.  I hate how little effort some artists are making today.  Anyway, check out these photos!

Beyoncé Takes Home Two 2009 BET Awards

June 29, 2009 by Jeanne

Beyoncé won twice at last night’s BET Awards in the following categories - “Best Female R&B Artist” and “Video of the Year” for "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)."

I think she deserved to win both of those awards since “Single Ladies” became a phenomenon.  It’s so basic but I think the bare-bones, no frills video of just choreographed dance moves appealed to fans and soon, people all over the world were posting YouTube videos of themselves doing the dancing.  It was incredible!

To pay her respects to Michael Jackson, who died last week, Beyoncé sang “Ave Maria” and Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel.”  It was a touching tribute and she definitely sounded filled with emotion.

Janet Jackson Discusses Michael Jackson at BET Awards

June 29, 2009 by Jeanne

In what I’m sure was a very difficult moment, Janet Jackson took to the stage at last night’s BET Awards to make a brief statement about the death of her superstar brother, Michael Jackson.  The singer said that they “miss Michael so much.”

She left the stage and Ne-Yo and Jamie Foxx performed Michael Jackson’s classic hit “I’ll Be There.”  You could see tears streaming down the faces of some of the people in the audience.  I’m sure it was a very emotional experience for everyone at the Shrine Auditorium.

Lily Allen Dons White Glove In Tribute to Michael Jackson

June 29, 2009 by Jeanne

Lily Allen performed on Day 1 at Britain’s Glastonbury Festival and paid tribute to the Michael Jackson by wearing a single while glove.  The King of Pop died last week after going into cardiac arrest at his Holmby Hills home. The circumstances surrounding his death are still unclear but that hasn’t stopped the outpouring of love from his peers and fans.

I haven’t been able to find a video of this performance yet but I did uncover this interview from the event.  She talked a bit about what it’s like to be performing at Glastonbury (her grandmother actually passed away during the festival last year) and revealed that she’s actually staying in a tent-like structure while she’s there.  She also explained that the glove is a “little Michael Jackson tribute.”  Despite the fact that the blonde wig was a bit distracting, I thought it was a fun interview.

Kate Voegele “99 Times” Video

June 24, 2009 by Jeanne

You might know Kate Voegele best for her recurring role on CW’s One Tree Hill.  On the show, she plays Mia Catalano, a young singer and keyboardist and has performed songs from her real-life debut album, Don’t Look Away.  While she’s expected to return to Hill this August, she’s also been busy in the studio.

Kate has released the video for her song “99 Times” from her album, A Fine Mess, which was released on May 18, 2009.  I actually really like the song despite the fact that it’s got a predictable pattern and chord progression (although the bass line gets a little more interesting towards the end).  I find her tone surprisingly rich for this type of track and I hope that people can separate the TV star from the artist because I think she’s got some talent.

The song details your standard guy/girl problems with Kate emerging stronger after being lied to “99 Times.”  Maybe it’s an answer to Jay-Z “99 Problems.”  Um… yeah, probably not.

Anyway, check out the video.  It’s simple but effective enough.

Lady Gaga Wins and Performs at 2009 MuchMusic Awards

June 22, 2009 by Jeanne

Lady Gaga was honored with the Best International Video – Artist prize for “Poker Face” at last night’s 2009 MuchMusic Awards in Toronto, Ontario Canada.  There were months where you literally couldn’t go anywhere without hearing someone singing or playing that song.

Gaga also took to the stage where she first performed her single “LoveGame” and then thrilled the crowd with “Poker Face.”  I’m glad she did that song – I think if you win an award for a single, it’s tacky if you don’t perform it.  I realize that there are a lot of Gaga fans out there and part of her allure is her image but I’ve got to say that there are times when I think she almost crosses the line.  Then again, who can pull off singing while their bra is shooting sparks?  Certainly not me…

Mary J. Blige and Keri Hilson Working With Chris Brown

June 20, 2009 by Jeanne

Both seasoned veteran, Mary J. Blige, and up-and-comer, Keri Hilson, have been working with Chris Brown on some new music.

Curiously, Mary J’s new single is called “Stronger” and the lyrics are, of course, all about emerging from some dark times with the support of a loved one.  I know that some people have been wondering why she would choose to work with him now – they are such an odd pairing and he’s still facing assault charges for allegedly attacking his girlfriend, Rihanna.  I understand what she’s doing.  Mary J. has been through some tough times of her own and she attributes her successful and ability to overcome her struggles to the love and support of her husband and the good friends in her life.  I think that she’s trying to do the same for Chris Brown.

The song is okay.  I’m not sure that it’s finished being mixed but it’s a little stark and very bland compared with Mary J’s usual sound.  There’s not too much of Chris Brown in it so I’d barely call it a collaboration.  Listen to the song here and tell me what you think:

Meanwhile, Keri Hilson told E! Online the following:  "He [Chris Brown] contacted me like four or five days ago.  Us working together will probably be the first project I’ve worked on as a songwriter in a while."  Of course, this is more of a natural fit than the song with Mary J because Keri and Chris as closer in age, at similar points in their careers and have worked together in the past.

Keri also had some optimistic things to say about the future of Chris’ career:  "It is unfortunate what they are going through, but I always feel like if you’ve ever had a fan base, you’re really only one song away from appeasing that fan base.  Whether that song is autobiographical or whether you want to talk about that or not, you’re just one hit song away. And that’s what I think of the industry in a nutshell."

Katy Perry “Waking Up in Vegas” Video

June 18, 2009 by Jeanne

By now, you’ve probably seen the video for Katy Perry’s newest single “Waking Up in Vegas but, since this song continues to pick up momentum, I thought I’d write about it (plus, it came out before I started writing on this blog!).

I don’t think “Vegas” has the same catchiness as Katy’s earlier hits “I Kissed a Girl” and “Hot and Cold” but I think the lyrics and video make up for that.  Another bonus is that it’s a lot more upbeat than “Thinking of You,” her third release from her One of the Boys album.

To add authenticity, the video was actually shot in Las Vegas with the casino and room scenes taking place at the Palms hotel (and, yes, that is Penn and Teller that she kicks out!).  I appreciate the retro style and sound that Katy brings to her music but I do think that she borders on attention-seeking which I think detracts from her image.  After a while, it just starts to feel overly gimmicky and cheesy.   Still, she has some of the most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen.  Check it out here:

Paradiso Girls Ft. Lil Jon and Eve “Patron Tequila”

June 16, 2009 by Jeanne

The Paradiso Girls have released the music video for “Patron Tequila” featuring Lil Jon and Eve.  Before I talk about the song, I thought I’d take a moment to give you a little background on this quintet.

The Paradiso Girls are like the United Nation of girl bands since each of the five women is from a different country - Barbados, England, France, Philippines, and the U.S.  I think that this adds a little something extra to their style and vocals.  The group is signed with music/Interscope Records and I think they could become very popular.

“Patron Tequila” was produced by Polow da Don and is the perfect track for night out at the clubs (even to listen to with your windows down on your way to the club).  When you add Lil Jon and Eve to the mix, you’ve got an anthem in the making.

The video is also a lot of fun.  By the end of it, I guarantee you’ll be singing along to the hook.  The lyrics are pretty funny too.  Check it out:

The Veronicas Tour Dates, “Take Me On The Floor” Video

June 9, 2009 by Jeanne

The Veronicas are embarking on a summer tour and I would encourage you to head to a show and check them out if they happen to be performing in a location near you.

The twin sisters, Jessica and Lisa Origliasso (no they are not actually both named Veronica!), hail from Brisbane, Australia and have combined electropop and pop rock into an award-winning combination.

When asked about their band name they explained that, while they were watching the movie, Heathers,  Christian Slater asks Winona Ryder’s character (who they described as a “cool, unique chick with an attitude”), “Are you a Heather?” to which she replies “No, I’m a Veronica.”  cool, unique chick with an attitude."

After the 2005 success of their debut album, The Secret Life of…, they followed up with Hook Me Up which was released in 2007.  The title track because their first number one single in Australia!  They have released the video for their most recent single “Take Me On the Floor” which I find completely infectious.  Watch it here:

For more visit or check out their official YouTube channel!  See the complete list of the Summer 2009 Tour Dates after the jump!
