Beyoncé won twice at last night’s BET Awards in the following categories - “Best Female R&B Artist” and “Video of the Year” for "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)."
I think she deserved to win both of those awards since “Single Ladies” became a phenomenon. It’s so basic but I think the bare-bones, no frills video of just choreographed dance moves appealed to fans and soon, people all over the world were posting YouTube videos of themselves doing the dancing. It was incredible!
To pay her respects to Michael Jackson, who died last week, Beyoncé sang “Ave Maria” and Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel.” It was a touching tribute and she definitely sounded filled with emotion.
Sasha Fierce, Beyoncé’s alter ego who brought us “Single Ladies” is back with “Diva” - the female version of a hustler, while Beyoncé waxes poetic about being wrapped in love’s embrace “Halo.”
I was lucky enough to get a peek at them before Sony/BMG sent YouTube DMCA notices and had them removed. However, you can still get both videos exclusively on iTunes.
**Update** Embedding is disabled, but
“Diva” is currently available on YouTube. Check it out before it gets removed.
You still have to go to iTunes to get the official “Halo” video, but the song is so beautiful, it’s worth posting what Sony/BMG has made available.
There is no doubt that Beyoncé is one the most talented young stars in R&B. She had nearly reached critical mass in terms of publicity following the release of B-Day, now her latest album I Am…Sasha Fierce and its respective singles are burning up the charts.
“Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)” is a particular favorite, having jumped from 28 to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week, and has been getting constant spins on the radio.
So much so, that “Single Ladies” could be classified as an earworm. You can’t help humming and even singing “all my single ladies…” for days on end after hearing the song a couple times. It is quite an infectious tune.
At this year’s AMAs, Beyoncé delivered a sexy performance of “Single Ladies,” one of the best of the night. There was actually a moment when she seemed to be channeling Tina Turner via the dance, and damn if that all girl band didn’t rock. Check it out after the jump.

The American Music Awards aired last night and for once, the women dominated the festivities.
Alicia Keys took home two awards, one for favorite pop/rock album and another for favorite soul/R&B album. Rihanna received awards for favorite female artist in the pop/rock and R&B categories, Jordin Sparks won favorite female adult contemporary artist, as did Taylor Swift for country music; while Carrie Underwood took home the award for favorite country album. The two special awards went to Mariah Carey and Annie Lennox who received an honorary award and a Award of Merit respectively.
The performances of the night were touch and go; dialed in and just so-so for the most part. There were however a few stand outs.
In terms of energy, Miley Cyrus was fantastic, in a cute, well trained Disney star way. When watching her perform, you sort of get the sense that she has the potential to become one of the next pop queens. That is, as long as she manages her stardom - and the trappings thereof - properly.
Beyoncé was beautiful, sexy, and strong, however her formula is starting to show. This is not to say she wasn’t entertaining. I mean, you gotta give the girl credit for being a true show woman and working her ass of. You can tell she gives her all and she’s a professional. However, something about her performance seemed a bit detached. She was just going through the motions and sort of disengaged with the audience. This could have been more of a reflection on the audience than Beyoncé herself.
It was P!nk who gave me chills with her naked and vulnerable performance of “Sober” from her latest album Funhouse. While I personally don’t think this is P!nk’s best album, it is certainly turning out to be one of the most successful. Even more than that though, it is deeply introspective, which came through beautifully while she was on stage.

It’s been two years since the release of B-Day and we should have known that Beyoncé, the beloved pop/R&B princess, could not stay away for long; especially not now that she’s settled into her marriage to hip-hop mogul Jay-Z.
Beyoncé’s third solo LP - currently untitled - is scheduled for release November 18th, and is being touted as the chanteuse’s most personal and “revelatory” work to date.
Several tracks from the album have already been leaked. Sources say, however, official singles “If I Were a Boy” and “Single Ladies” will drop as the release date approaches.
This announcement comes on the heels of Beyoncé’s Fashion Rocks performances this week.

Last night the Stand Up to Cancer took over network television. I watched tearfully during a montage of people talking about their own struggles with cancer and commiserated with blogging friends who were also taking a stand against the disease that has reeked havoc on so many of our lives.
I was bawling by the time the ladies from Fashion Rocks hit the Radio City Music Hall to perform their tribute to the survivors and families of the many people affected by cancer. Somehow, the message of hope broke through my tear soaked thoughts of my step mother who was not lucky enough to survive breast cancer, and I felt the triumph in the music.
If you missed it, never fear, ShePlaysMusic has it right here.
Catch these and other favorite artists at the Fashion Rocks concert on CBS this Tuesday at 9:00 pm EST. All proceeds from the show will benefit Stand Up to Cancer. For now, visit the website and see what you can do to take a stand.
Congratulations are in order for newlyweds Beyonce Knowles and Jay-Z. It appears their quickie wedding was really a shotgun wedding, Beyonce is pregnant.
The news, reported today in a Hollyscoop exclusive reported:
Hollyscoop has learned exclusively through multiple sources that Beyonce is expecting. A source close to the couple revealed, “Beyonce is 100% pregnant, which is why the couple rushed their wedding.” The source also told Hollyscoop that all the friends and family that attended the ultra private wedding were all aware that Beyonce was already expecting.
Our source added that Beyonce is in her early stages, but don’t expect this star to come out with a confirmation statement anytime soon. The couple is pretty private about their personal lives–they still haven’t even confirmed their wedding. But the source confirmed that she is expecting and they rushed the wedding due to Beyonce’s strong Christian beliefs.
Now, I don’t know that Beyonce is that strong a Christian given that she’s knocked up and all. But at least they did get married. I bet you won’t see this couple pimping their baby pictures out for millions.
Well…have you been on the edge of your seat with anticipation waiting for some sort of sign or indication that Beyonce and Jay-Z are indeed married?
Well wait no more. People magazine has confirmed the two are married. The pair’s signed wedding license was filed last Friday in Scarsdale, New York.
I don’t know about you, but I’m so relieved.
Looks like Beyonce and long time love rapper Jay-Z are getting married. The pair showed up at the courthouse in Scarsdale, New York to file for a marriage license. Since the licenses are only good for sixty days, does this mean we’re going to see a wedding within the next two months?
Jay-Z is on tour at the moment, but that will be done in May. Spring wedding?
Aretha Franklin took issue with Beyonce’s introduction of Tina Turner at Sunday night’s Grammys. During her introduction Beyonce said, “There is one legend who has the essence of all of those things: the glamour, the soul, the passion, the strength, the talent,” said Knowles, strutting in hot pants. “Ladies and gentlemen. Stand on your feet and give it up for the queen.”
Aretha feels she’s the only Queen, however. “I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyonce,” Franklin said in a statement issued by her publicist. “However, I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy.”
Sounds kind of petty to me. Though Aretha is known as the Queen of Soul, Tina Turner earned enough accolades to also be considered Rock ‘N Roll royalty. And if Aretha did have issues with it, why not discuss it with the people who wrote Beyonce’s script instead of taking it to the press? Maybe a cry for attention? The battle of the divas?
I think it’s all rather unnecessary.
